L’École Doctorale EGAAL
Training courses
According to article 12 of the decree of 25 May 2016, a doctoral training agreement must be established for each doctoral student. Placed as an appendix to the doctoral charter, this agreement, signed by the doctoral student, the thesis director and the unit director, must be established in the first months of the thesis and specifies in particular the individual training path of the doctoral student in relation to his professional project. In close consultation between the doctoral student and the thesis director, this course must integrate the needs for additional disciplinary and transversal training necessary for the completion of the thesis and the professional project. The course can be reviewed each time a thesis is re-registered, in particular the proportion of disciplinary/complementary training, to optimise the coherence between the training plan and the professional project. These revisions must correspond to a real and considered evolution of the doctoral student's project and must be formalized with the agreement of the thesis department.
In the ED EGAAL, there are two training profiles during the thesis:
Training courses " Catalogue "
Depending on his or her background, thesis programme and professional project, the doctoral student chooses disciplinary courses from the ED EGAAL catalogue and cross-functional courses from the UBL catalogue, the latter offering both the courses organised by the School of Doctors and the site's Doctoral Poles. These trainings are called "Catalogue" trainings.
Out-of-Catalogue" training courses
The training catalogues of ED EGAAL and UBL are not exhaustive. Doctoral students of ED EGAAL are allowed to follow external training courses, known as "Outside the catalogue". The "Out of catalogue" training courses concern:
The follow-up of transversal/disciplinary modules, in person or online (e.g. MOOC), organised by higher education institutions, research organisations, private structures, scientific networks....
Activities during the thesis such as participation in a scientific event, organisation/coordination of a scientific event, participation in events for doctoral students, a scientific stay, a teaching activity, a superb and dynamic association of doctoral students such as Greenyd....
These two training modalities, "Catalogue" and "Non-catalogue", are counted in hours and a doctoral student must validate at least 100 hours of training during the first 36 months of the thesis. The ED allows doctoral students to combine transversal and disciplinary training in a range of 40-60%. Finally, a doctoral student from ED EGAAL must attend the ED EGAAL Scientific Days and undergo training in "Scientific Ethics and Integrity". This training in "Scientific Ethics and Integrity" may be offered by UBL or another institution, for more information on this training, you can consult the resources and services/documents page of the ED EGAAL. MOOCs are also available at the University of Bordeaux and Lyon :
The rules for validating training courses, the indicative time scale, specific and derogatory cases are described in the various sections of the document "Guide to training during the thesis in the ED EGAAL: offers, rules and procedures" which can be downloaded here.
Disciplinary training courses organised by ED EGAAL and included in its catalogue available on its website
Cross-curricular training courses organized by the UBL through the School of Doctors and the doctoral poles of the site and integrated into its catalogue which can be consulted on its website
Doctoral modules (face-to-face or online - MOOC) organized by research organizations, higher education institutions, private structures, scientific networks.... Depending on the module followed, the training may be disciplinary or transversal.

Doctoral students support and supervision
In order to monitor the progress of the doctoral theses and the doctoral student's professional project and to limit situations of failure, the EGAAL doctoral school wishes to set up two mechanisms: the individual monitoring committee and the tutor.
The tutor is a monitoring device at the doctoral student's request.
The thesis director
The doctoral student is placed under the control and responsibility of a thesis director. The scientific direction of the doctoral project may be carried out jointly with a co-director. The thesis director is responsible for the scientific supervision of the doctoral student and undertakes to devote a significant part of his time to him. He ensures the regular follow-up of the thesis work, and establishes, in consultation with the doctoral student, a schedule of meetings. He or she helps the doctoral student to define the research project, ensuring in particular that it is both original and formative, as well as feasible within the prescribed time frame. He undertakes to discuss with him any new directions he may take in the light of the results achieved. The thesis director ensures that the doctoral student is well integrated into his or her research unit and that the doctoral student has access to the resources necessary to carry out the thesis project. Finally, he actively supports the doctoral student in the construction of his professional project (participation in training courses, conferences...).
The EGAAL doctoral school is vigilant about the quality of the supervision of doctoral students and, in this perspective, limits the maximum number of doctoral students supervised by the same thesis director.
The Individual Monitoring Committee
-
The composition of the ISC:
Each doctoral student will be accompanied by an Individual Monitoring Committee (IMC). The members of the CSI are identified by the thesis director and the composition proposed to the doctoral school. The CSI will be composed of at least two persons (teacher-researchers and/or researchers), not involved in the direction/supervision of the thesis. This ISC must contain at least one full member of the HDR outside the research team (in the team sense evaluated by HCERES) and at least two scientists outside the registration establishment. The participation of personalities from the business world is possible. A member of the ISC is designated as chairperson and will validate the content of the ISC report before signing. In the event of the resignation of one of the committee members, he or she will be replaced following the same process. Finally, the members of the ISC may not be appointed as rapporteurs when the thesis defence jury is composed. The composition of the CSI must be submitted within the first 6 months of the thesis.
-
The missions of the CSI:
The CSI is an opportunity for the doctoral student to review his or her activities. The CSI ensures the smooth running of the programme by relying on the doctoral charter and the training agreement. In an interview with the doctoral student, he evaluates the conditions of his training and the progress of his research. It makes recommendations and transmits a report of the interview to the doctoral school, the doctoral student and the thesis director. It allows the doctoral student to explain any difficulties encountered (difficulties of all kinds: scientific, material, relational). In particular, the ISC shall ensure that any form of conflict, discrimination or harassment is prevented.
-
The organization of CSI meetings:
The CSI meets at the request of the doctoral student and the thesis director. The thesis director, the co-director(s), in particular for theses carried out in several units/teams or a joint supervision team, must be present at the CSI. The participation of one or more CSI members by videoconference is strongly recommended.
The first meeting is scheduled during the first year of the thesis, to validate the content and planning of the thesis, and the second at the end of the second year. A third meeting of the ISC may be organized if the doctoral candidate/thesis director believes that it is necessary for the finalization of the thesis or if a 4th year registration is scheduled.
Each CSI meeting must include a confidential interview with the doctoral student in the absence of the supervisors (minimum 15 minutes). The report is sent to the (deputy) director of the doctoral school for validation.
-
CSI and re-registration:
At the end of the meeting, the members of the CSI/the thesis director/the doctoral student complete the CSI report according to the framework proposed by the doctoral school. Once completed, the original must be sent to the doctoral school's site secretariat and copies are sent to the doctoral student, the thesis director, the director of the host unit/team and the members of the CSI. In this report, the members of the CSI give a detailed opinion on the application for re-enrolment in a thesis (2nd, 3rd or 4th year) and formulate recommendations. This report also includes the opinion of the thesis directorate. In case of difficulty, the (deputy) directorate transmits the report to the thesis commission for its opinion. The director/vice-director of the doctoral school shall propose to the head of the accredited institution the enrolment in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year as soon as these opinions are favourable. Re-registration for a thesis is therefore subject to the receipt of this report signed by the doctoral student, the thesis director and the members of the CSI.
The outline of the CSI report is available via this link.
The thesis defence
Thesis juries
The thesis jury is appointed by the head of the enrolment establishment after consulting the director of the EGAAL doctoral school and the thesis director. The number of jury members ranges from four to eight. At least half of its members are French or foreign personalities from outside the doctoral school and the doctoral registration institution, chosen for their scientific or professional competence in the field of research concerned.
The defence is public, unless exceptionally granted by the headmaster if the subject of the thesis is of a proven confidential nature. Before the defence, the summary of the thesis is distributed within the institution or institutions benefiting from joint accreditation.
The conditions required for the defense
In the EGAAL doctoral school, the authorization of defense will be conditioned by the validation of 100 hours of training during the thesis and the obtaining of at least one publication from the thesis work, signed by the first author doctoral student, at the stage "accepted" in an international journal with a reading committee. A patent application can replace this condition for theses carried out under CIFRE contract. This principle should only be exempted in exceptional cases and after analysis by the doctoral school's office.
